Tenants, Advocates Testify at “The People’s Housing Speakout” In The Heart of Newark

The Greater Newark Housing Preservation Partners will host “The People’s Housing Speak Out” at Grace Episcopal Church, 950 Broad St., between Newark City Hall and the Federal Building, on June 30, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. The Speak Out will spotlight the ongoing loss of low-income housing units in Newark and explore viable measures to create housing opportunities before an influential panel of leaders and policymakers.

In recent years, 1772 private-owned government subsidized apartments have been demolished and 888 public housing units are slated to be demolished. Three segments of testimony will detail the current portrait of housing: Landscape of Need, Impact on People, and Possible Action Steps. Advocates, organizers, tenant leaders, and families and individuals on waiting lists will describe the loss of low-income units, through their own experience as well as facts and numerical figures. Speakers will also present the options that are currently available and upcoming to preserve affordable homes. An “open mic” session will be held after testimony to facilitate the participation of the public at the forum.

The panel of experts who will listen to these presentations will make brief remarks afterwards. Confirmed panelists include: Cornell Brooks - Director of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Rev. Bruce Davidson - Director of the NJ Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry, Newark Councilman Charles Bell, Newark Councilman and Director of the Department of Citizen Services of Essex County Anibal Ramos, Newark Council President Mildred Crump, State Senator Teresa Ruiz, and a representative from the office of Senator Frank Lautenberg.

The People's Housing Speak Out is less than a week away! Make sure you don't miss the event on June 30, 2009 6:00pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 950 Broad St, Newark, NJ (Between City Hall and the Federal Building).

The Speak Out is broken up into three sections:

1) Landscape of Need - People Will testify about the current landscape of affordable housing, particularly how it is sorely lacking. This will include information about demolitions, foreclosures, and other actions that has reduced low income housing.

2) Impact - Displaced tenants, housing voucher holders, people on waiting lists and current tenants in subsidized housing and more will testify about the impact of the lack of affordable on their lives as well as the important role that it plays in society.

3) Possible Action Steps - Current laws of all sorts and advocacy positions will be discussed.

Afterwards, there will be an open mic and following that, remarks from a panel of listeners.

Yesterday:
A few interesting things:

1) I watched most of Janie's Jane, a film about a woman who started a day car center from the bottom up, in the Brick City's Ironbound section.

2) The person who shot the film visited yesterday and did some interviews on tape of myself and two co-workers. He would like to make a new film, but needs to raise the capital.

3) He was able to shoot me in my element during a Tenant Association meeting at Aspen River Park. It was as crazy as usual, which made it fantastic for him to film.

I did some fliering work. Kept organizing for our event which is coming up on June 30th. It is looking fantastic. I attended a tenant meeting from which I just got home.

This weekend was impossible for me to get on, particularly 10-11pm promised slot - imma have to come up with an earlier one for Fridays.

Here is a synopsis of Friday's summit:

Crashed the Summit. Everyone who registered was allowed to go. I passed out a flier and a press release which the NHA found offensive because it stated that we (organizers, tenants, advocates) were "virtually excluded" from the conference. I had to explain that over and over again (see my last post for an exp) but we did what we wanted to; I asked questions (albeit some that I wish i could rephrase or retract), our Board Pres of the Newark Coalition for Low Income Housing was on a panel that we were able to get him on after someone dropped out last week (to the denial of the NHA), and people got the news about THE PEOPLE'S SPEAKOUT, schedule for June 30, 2009 at Grace Episcopoal Church 950 Broad St. 6:00p-8:30p. According to the NHA speaking the truth and organizing it in text is part of an old model of organizing and advocacy. In reality, I think that the militant and organized approach scares people in power, especially when they know that they are doing WRONG WRONG WRONG. We had a nice fact sheet and a pretty good explaination of the problem with the NHA's policies, primarily that there will not be any affordable housing for folks, nevermind public housing which is going to be phased out soon.

Afterwards I went home tired, tired, tired, ate and went to church. A couple from another church has been preparing dinner for folks who wish to eat a meal on friday nights and usually can't get a hold on something nice. A lot of homeless and undocumented guys are around the area and they really enjoy coming to spend some time at the church. I went for the first time last night and I really enjoyed it. There were men from all over latin america and I was talkin all kinds of stuff with them, from politics, to spirituality, to FOOTBAAAAAALLLLL!!! And of course there were Hondurans there so I got to listen about the Salvadoran defeat some more.

Later that night I got to see some awesome folks at two different venues. I think I spent more time in a car looking for parking/my way back home than chillin with real cool people.

Today: lots of organizing. Invited Keith Kinard to our Housing Speak Out. Cory Booker declined the invitation. HUD Tenants Coalition meeting was held, which is always awesome. We had some real good people out today.

Aiight, so I'm not on air right now but I have to get this one off my chest, even if real quickly.

Tomorrow there is an Affordable Housing Summit hosted by the Newark Housing Authority at the Paul Robeson Center on MLK Blvd starting at 8:30 in the morn. It's pretty much a sham because no CDCs, non-profits, tenant organization, or tenants were invited to add their 2 cents about public housing policy. Me and my crew of organizers, advocates, and tenants all registered but have not receieved a welcome so we are gonna crash the party like Ralph Nader. After we complained that we weren't invited about a month ago, they changed the name to "...:a conversation between housing authorities and universities." You gotta love the ivory tower, its relationship to disfunctional institutions, and its inability to read the grassroots. I found out about the summit by doing some recon on the NHA's bogus website, which was confirmed @ a rotary club meeting by Keith Kinard, the NHA director, who mentioned a bit about it.

Even better, we have organized our own event, "The People's Housing Speakout," a popularly based forum that will reveal the reality of affordable housing needs in The Brick City. We are having a panel of elected officials, clergy, and media listen to people who will testify about their housing woes, particularly the lack of affordable housing. This will be at Grace Episcopal Church on 950 Broad St Across from the Federal Building in Downtown Newark on June 30, 2009 at 6:00pm.

Simultaneously, I can't put down what is shaping up to be my NEW favorite book: Gang Leader For A Day, by Sudhir Venkatesh. I invited him to the summit but he's busy. As I read this book, I know it would have been awesome for him to be present. I will give more analysis when I'm done with it but to sum it up, the book is about him studying life in the projects as a grad student at a much more deeper and personal level that most sociologists and him subsequently realizing more about the hood than there is to meet the eye.

So right now, the music I'm playin is mostly off my PSP. I love music and right now I'm enjoying the smooth tunes of Thievery Corporation, thank you Ethan for the recommendation.

I'll try to be on air at 10pm. Oh, and El Salvador lost yesterday :-(. Even worse, so did the Mets. BUT: I got subway series tickets, thank you Dad.

Aiight folks. FIRST - I'm on right now. I'm aiming to still be on at 10pm tonight BUT El Salvador is playing Honduras in a World Cup qualifier tonight and I might be stuck to a screen drooling.

Either way, I wanted to let ya'll know exactly what I'm doing here.

The most solid thing I have so far is the 10-11pm slot, which is most likely to extend until Midnight or later.

I'm streaming from an online server using Icecast, a free and awesome software. Unfortunately, the server time is not free, just for the software so PLEASE click on the Amazon and Google links at the bottom and at the right if you see something slightly interesting CLICK IT!

I've been amazing hardware to make this easier too. I have a few controllers (hardware that reads/sends MIDI signals to and from the computer) that allow me to mix better (Korg Mini Pad, M-Audio X-Session Pro), a mic (from Radioshack), and a studio quality external soundcard (M-Audio Fasttrack Pro) with midi input/outputs and 2 mic inserts. I hope to get better and more equipment soon.
