Water Utility Will Be Shut Off For Thousands of Newarkers

Ok. This is ridiculous.

CNN video re: the shut off.

Star Ledger Article (I would have been quoted again, but I failed to make the deadline):

Clearly, the Savior's Finest opposes such punitive action. The debts should have been collected before they reached the current levels, which are causing the shut offs. This also speaks to absentee landlords who, because they are not the ones to suffer, believe that the water utility bill is not important enough to pay.

IF ANYONE IS CUT OFF: WITHHOLD YOUR RENT MONEY AND DEPOSIT IT WITH THE WATER COMMISSION. YOUR WATER WILL BE TURNED ON AGAIN AND THE COST WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM YOUR RENT.

Download "The People's Housing Speak Out" June 30, 2009 at Grace Episcopal Church

Sponsored by the Greater Newark HUD Tenants Coalition and the Newark Coalition for Low Income Housing.

WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE GRASSROOTS THINKS ABOUT AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN NEWARK? THIS IS IT.

Click HERE and download the file. The event was split into three segments, each segment as well as the speakers are identified. A list will be uploaded shortly.

Greater Newark HUD Tenants Coalition Speaks With Governor Jon Corzine at James Baxter Terrace Public Housing Complex

Ok so his aides took a million pictures, but none of them are on Flickr. This is from my phone.

The meeting was made possible by the efforts of Donna Jackson and Louis Shockley, two committed community activists.

Ms. Jackson and I had the opportunity to ask the governor several questions and present him several of the tenant's plights. I was able to personally hand him some information from the Greater Newark HUD Tenants Coalition about the bleak status of the public housing stock in Newark. Tenants made it clear that the demolition of Baxter Terrace is resulting in gentrification because people are being pushed out of Newark, communities that have seen generations of families are being torn apart, and the proposed replacement for affordable housing does not meet modest expectations or legal requirements. Out of 5000 proposed units, 20 will be affordable. BIG WHOOP! Some tenants even mentioned the environmental problems over at Hyatt court because of its proximity to the overpass of Routes 1 and 9 as well as the displacement of tenants because half of the complex is proposed for demolition.

I was very happy to ask the governor before to call a meeting of the State Housing Commission, mandated by A500 in the Summer of 2008. He didn't say anything, but he did not expect that request judging from the shock on his face.

Greater Newark HUD Tenants Coalition Organizer Victor Monterrosa, Jr. Quoted in Tuesday's 8/11/09 Star Ledger

The NHA has unveiled two new complexes. Of course, they always forget to mention that they are yet to explain how they will follow state law A500 and replace every unit that is being demolished. Even worse, their celebration of these units is a blow to residents conscious of the systematic displacement of residents to places outside of Newark coupled with an influx of affluent people, aka GENTRIFICATION.

The Link:

Newark unveils second phase of $21M affordable housing project - by David Giambusso/The Star-Ledger

The Quote:

While politicians and housing officials said they were heartened by the new approach to public housing, some expressed frustration that more housing was not available to Newark's poor.

"I think that it's nice that these units are being provided, but we're still losing over a thousand units," said Victor Monterrosa Jr., an organizer for the Greater Newark HUD Tenants Coalition. "The townhouses look great, they really do, but it doesn't replace hard public housing units.''

Monterrosa said there should be more focus on preserving and upgrading current public housing units such as the Baxter Terrace and John W. Hyatt Court.

"If you look at the structure, you can gut it and redevelop and you can have long-standing structures that are modern," Monterrosa said.

Personally, I think the format in the paper is better. There is a big picture of Cory Booker and Frank Lautenberg in the units.

Unfortunately - along the lines of thought espoused by the woman quoted at the end - it is rumored that tenants moving into these units will not be allowed to make any modifications to the units, such as hanging items on the wall or painting walls. A community activist refers to this as prison, which sadly is only half true since in NJ prisoners can no longer hang up items on walls but in many prisons across the country prisoners do.

#5 Tenant Harassment: The Living Nightmare of the Deans

GREATER NEWARK HUD TENANTS COALITION
Tenant Harassment: The Living Nightmare of the Deans
For Immediate Release – Contact: Bill Good (908) 347-1422, TenantOrganizer@gmail.com

In the 1980s Deborah Deans and Debra Montgomery, daughter and mother respectively, moved into a beautiful apartment on 129 Chancellor Avenue in a privately-owned complex where they have lived since. Their apartment is affordable in comparison to their neighboring units through a rent control law. Unfortunately, Newark also has a vacancy decontrol law, which allows rents to rise 25% each time a tenant moves out of a rent controlled apartment. This law encourages turnover and occasionally leads to landlord harassment to pressure tenants to move. Is this what is happening to Deborah Deans and Debra Montgomery?

129 Chancellor Ave. is owned by Apollo Real Estate and managed by Radiant Management. Last July, sewage backed up into their basement storage, causing Ms. Deans and Ms. Montgomery to lose $20,000 worth of sentimental valuables, clothing, and furnishings. On Dec. 29, 2008, Ms. Deans found her vehicle badly scratched on the rear bumper. Since placing a complaint, security is no longer provided in parking lots. Hammering from the ceiling, banging, jumping and running are some of the most frequent forms of noise that Ms. Deans and Ms. Montgomery experience. The tenants withheld their rent after the management refused to take action on the noise and a letter to cease was issued to their neighbors. The noises have again become a daily occurrence. In May the tenants experienced fumes coming into their apartment. This caused severe allergic reactions, a swollen tongue, face, and throat and a huge increase in blood pressure, resulting in overnight hospitalization. The family’s windows have been covered up, cutting off ventilation. Their electrical wiring already precludes them from installing an Air Conditioner for respiratory problems, even though the doctor has prescribed one. Ms. Deans’s vehicle was scratched again and keyed in late May. Recently, feces are backing up from their bathtub and toilet into the apartment. All of these problems are recurring.

Nevertheless, these tenants refuse to be intimidated or to move. These problems are not the first that they face at 129 Chancellor. Their previous battles have caused the city’s code enforcement officials to engage previous owners and make code mandated changes. They want to remain in their apartment, which they love, and to continue living in a dwelling that is part of a vanishing stock of affordable housing in Newark, NJ.

Greater Newark Housing Preservation Partners

Tenants, Advocates Testify at “The People’s Housing Speakout” In The Heart of Newark
For Immediate Release
Contact: Victor Monterrosa, Jr., TenantOrganizer@gmail.com - (862) 215-8997

The Greater Newark Housing Preservation Partners will host “The People’s Housing Speak Out” at Grace Episcopal Church, 950 Broad St., between Newark City Hall and the Federal Building, on June 30, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. The Speak Out will spotlight the ongoing loss of low-income housing units in Newark and explore viable measures to create housing opportunities before an influential panel of leaders and policymakers.

In recent years, 1772 private-owned government subsidized apartments have been demolished and 888 public housing units are slated to be demolished. Three segments of testimony will detail the current portrait of housing: Landscape of Need, Impact on People, and Possible Action Steps. Advocates, organizers, tenant leaders, and families and individuals on waiting lists will describe the loss of low-income units, through their own experience as well as facts and numerical figures. Speakers will also present the options that are currently available and upcoming to preserve affordable homes. An “open mic” session will be held after testimony to facilitate the participation of the public at the forum.

The panel of experts who will listen to these presentations will make brief remarks afterwards. Confirmed panelists include: Cornell Brooks - Director of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Rev. Bruce Davidson - Director of the NJ Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry, Newark Councilman Charles Bell, Newark Councilman and Director of the Department of Citizen Services of Essex County Anibal Ramos, Newark Council President Mildred Crump, State Senator Teresa Ruiz, and a representative from the office of Senator Frank Lautenberg.

A few interesting things:

1) I watched most of Janie's Jane, a film about a woman who started a day car center from the bottom up, in the Brick City's Ironbound section.

2) The person who shot the film visited yesterday and did some interviews on tape of myself and two co-workers. He would like to make a new film, but needs to raise the capital.

3) He was able to shoot me in my element during a Tenant Association meeting at Aspen River Park. It was as crazy as usual, which made it fantastic for him to film.

Remember, if you can't stream using another program, download the ogg vorbis coded OR download VLC Player, my favorite player for years!

This weekend was impossible for me to get on, particularly 10-11pm promised slot - imma have to come up with an earlier one for Fridays.

Here is a synopsis of Friday's summit:

Crashed the Summit. Everyone who registered was allowed to go. I passed out a flier and a press release which the NHA found offensive because it stated that we (organizers, tenants, advocates) were "virtually excluded" from the conference. I had to explain that over and over again (see my last post for an exp) but we did what we wanted to; I asked questions (albeit some that I wish i could rephrase or retract), our Board Pres of the Newark Coalition for Low Income Housing was on a panel that we were able to get him on after someone dropped out last week (to the denial of the NHA), and people got the news about THE PEOPLE'S SPEAKOUT, schedule for June 30, 2009 at Grace Episcopoal Church 950 Broad St. 6:00p-8:30p. According to the NHA speaking the truth and organizing it in text is part of an old model of organizing and advocacy. In reality, I think that the militant and organized approach scares people in power, especially when they know that they are doing WRONG WRONG WRONG. We had a nice fact sheet and a pretty good explaination of the problem with the NHA's policies, primarily that there will not be any affordable housing for folks, nevermind public housing which is going to be phased out soon.

Afterwards I went home tired, tired, tired, ate and went to church. A couple from another church has been preparing dinner for folks who wish to eat a meal on friday nights and usually can't get a hold on something nice. A lot of homeless and undocumented guys are around the area and they really enjoy coming to spend some time at the church. I went for the first time last night and I really enjoyed it. There were men from all over latin america and I was talkin all kinds of stuff with them, from politics, to spirituality, to FOOTBAAAAAALLLLL!!! And of course there were Hondurans there so I got to listen about the Salvadoran defeat some more.

Later that night I got to see some awesome folks at two different venues. I think I spent more time in a car looking for parking/my way back home than chillin with real cool people.

Today: lots of organizing. Invited Keith Kinard to our Housing Speak Out. Cory Booker declined the invitation. HUD Tenants Coalition meeting was held, which is always awesome. We had some real good people out today.

On Air

Had a Problem With the connection but I'm on now.

http://panel1.serverhostingcenter.com/start/vjr85/

Remember, if you can't stream using another program, download the ogg vorbis coded OR download VLC Player, my favorite player for years!

Make requests below folks and check out the recently played tunes.

Off Air

Aiight, so I'm not on air right now but I have to get this one off my chest, even if real quickly.

Tomorrow there is an Affordable Housing Summit hosted by the Newark Housing Authority at the Paul Robeson Center on MLK Blvd starting at 8:30 in the morn. It's pretty much a sham because no CDCs, non-profits, tenant organization, or tenants were invited to add their 2 cents about public housing policy. Me and my crew of organizers, advocates, and tenants all registered but have not receieved a welcome so we are gonna crash the party like Ralph Nader. After we complained that we weren't invited about a month ago, they changed the name to "...:a conversation between housing authorities and universities." You gotta love the ivory tower, its relationship to disfunctional institutions, and its inability to read the grassroots. I found out about the summit by doing some recon on the NHA's bogus website, which was confirmed @ a rotary club meeting by Keith Kinard, the NHA director, who mentioned a bit about it.

Even better, we have organized our own event, "The People's Housing Speakout," a popularly based forum that will reveal the reality of affordable housing needs in The Brick City. We are having a panel of elected officials, clergy, and media listen to people who will testify about their housing woes, particularly the lack of affordable housing. This will be at Grace Episcopal Church on 950 Broad St Across from the Federal Building in Downtown Newark on June 30, 2009 at 6:00pm.

Simultaneously, I can't put down what is shaping up to be my NEW favorite book: Gang Leader For A Day, by Sudhir Venkatesh. I invited him to the summit but he's busy. As I read this book, I know it would have been awesome for him to be present. I will give more analysis when I'm done with it but to sum it up, the book is about him studying life in the projects as a grad student at a much more deeper and personal level that most sociologists and him subsequently realizing more about the hood than there is to meet the eye.

So right now, the music I'm playin is mostly off my PSP. I love music and right now I'm enjoying the smooth tunes of Thievery Corporation, thank you Ethan for the recommendation.

I'll try to be on air at 10pm. Oh, and El Salvador lost yesterday :-(. Even worse, so did the Mets. BUT: I got subway series tickets, thank you Dad.

As Always, Peace and Love. and keep jammin.

On air

Aiight folks. FIRST - I'm on right now. I'm aiming to still be on at 10pm tonight BUT El Salvador is playing Honduras in a World Cup qualifier tonight and I might be stuck to a screen drooling.

Either way, I wanted to let ya'll know exactly what I'm doing here.

The most solid thing I have so far is the 10-11pm slot, which is most likely to extend until Midnight or later.

I'm streaming from an online server using Icecast, a free and awesome software. Unfortunately, the server time is not free, just for the software so PLEASE click on the Amazon and Google links at the bottom and at the right if you see something slightly interesting CLICK IT!

I've been amazing hardware to make this easier too. I have a few controllers (hardware that reads/sends MIDI signals to and from the computer) that allow me to mix better (Korg Mini Pad, M-Audio X-Session Pro), a mic (from Radioshack), and a studio quality external soundcard (M-Audio Fasttrack Pro) with midi input/outputs and 2 mic inserts. I hope to get better and more equipment soon.

Folks, enjoy the music!

Peace and Love. keep jammin.

Online/Offline

Aiight, I noticed that most folks don't use twitter. I was hoping that those of you who would check the Tweets would also know when I was on/off air.

Here's a promise: unless otherwise noted, I will broadcast from 10-11pm nightly, straight music and I'll take requests.

Besides that one solid hour, I play intermittently throughout the day. Check this blog for announcements of when I am on/off air. Regardless, make requests below. Also, check out the recent playlist to see if there's anything you like.

The repeating file is still being worked on. It will be solid tho.

Peace and Love. keep jammin.

1:47am et, on air now, will be off air most of tomorrow.

The Saviors Finest on Icecast

Savior's Finest here! Thanks for visiting. I hope that you enjoy my Icecast stream.

For those of you who have can't open the stream, you must have an oggvorbis codec.

To make it less complicated, DOWNLOAD VLC PLAYER; it has been my favorite player for all types of files for four years now and it will allow you to hear the smoothest tunes on the net. I suggest trying to open the winamp link with VLC. If you have the ogg codec you can open with any other player too.

To start, visit:
http://panel1.serverhostingcenter.com/start/vjr85/

The taste is ecclectic but I'm working on a solid schedule. House, hip-hop, and protest music in spanish are on heavy rotation, but by far are not the only tunes heard. I will be working on streaming a constantly repeating file with some news and information, possibly some interview shows. Plus, I take requests. Hit me up on AIM (waiting85) or any other way you may know to contact me. I promise that contact information will be more public soon.

I'm on air sporadically, the best way to check is Twitter @SaviorsFinest.

Peace and Love, keep jammin.
